Michele Federico Iapaolo
He received the Degree in
Environmental Engineering with maximum grade from the Università Tor
Vergata di Roma in July 2002, with the thesis work "A Neural Network algorithm
for the estimation of ozone profiles from satellite data".
In November 2002 he started the GeoInformation PhD programme at the Università
Tor Vergata di Roma. His work focused on the retrieval of atmospheric parameters
from remote sensing instruments, and in particular on the retrieval of ozone
profiles from radiance measurements performed by instruments boarded on satellite
platforms, like the GOME (Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment), the nadir-viewing
spectrometer boarded on the ESA (European Space Agency) ERS-2 satellite. In
such a context, his studies have been addressed to the exploitation of neural
networks techniques either to perform the retrievals or to face with the problem
of the size reduction of the measurement vector. The work Automatic Selection
by Means of Neural Networks of GOME Optimum Spectral Channels for the Retrieval
of Ozone Vertical Profiles" presented at the 2003 IEEE International Geoscience
and Remote Sensing Symposium received the First Prize in the GRS-S Student Prize
Paper Competition.
From November 2004 and April 2005 he attended a six-month stage at IPSL (Institut
Pierre Simon Laplace) in Paris, working at a global validation of GOME retrieved
ozone profiles with LIDAR measurements. This validation exercise has been pursued
in the framework of the European project EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-science
in Europe), whose main objective is to build-up and develop a Grid technology
infrastructure available to scientists 24 hours-a-day.
The validation work resulted in the publication of a scientific paper in cooperation
with people responsible of the Network for Detection of Stratospheric Changes
(NDSC), which consists of more than 70 high-quality, remote-sensing research
stations for observing and understanding the physical and chemical state of
the stratosphere and upper troposphere.
From November 2005 he is involved in a series of ESA projects in the context
of the Image Information Mining. The activity aims at defining and implementing
processing techniques for the automatic extraction of relevant information from
Earth Observation satellite images, and driving such algorithms to operational
environments.
