Performance of Synthetic Aperture interferometric algorithms

TECHNICAL DETAILS: SAR Interferometry is a very important tool in radar Earth observation. Several European institutions have developed methods and software to process interferometric observations, including the Technical University of Denmark, the Technical University of Delft and the Technical University of Berlin. A compared critical analysis of the features of available software is required to assess accuracy and overall performance, taking also into account the effects of microwave propagation in the atmosphere. A description of the algorithms, executable codes and experimental SAR data will be made available to the candidate. The project will be carried out at ESA/ESRIN under the supervision of Drs. Andrea Della Vecchia and Francesco Sarti.

FRAMEWORK: SAR interferometry is being widely used to produce digital elevation models and to monitor displacements of the earth surface. Both scientific and operational/commercial applications are envisaged.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: The topic of the thesis is demanding, hence the candidate should possess a sound knowledge of electromagnetic waves, atmospheric propagation, SAR remote sensing and computer codes. A minimum average grade of 28/30 is required. Given the international environment, a good knowledge of English language is suitable.

OFFERED BENEFITS: The selected candidate will acquire experience in state-of-the-art advanced methodologies in Earth observation, working in a stimulating international context.
